As we come to know more of him, we discover that Ransom had a loveless childhood as so many heroes in historical romance seem to do!
And now he feels he has nothing to offer. I really liked Izzy.
Dare is justly renowned for her ability to write sharp, witty banter, and she has penned some terrific exchanges between Ransom and Izzy. In addition, both protagonists are very well-drawn, engaging characters who clearly need each other very much.
And Izzy is able to break through the protective barriers Ransom has constructed around himself, to begin to restore his faith in himself and in human nature; and to show him that he ,is worthy of love. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Romancing the Duke even though there were a couple of things that niggled at me.

I'll be charitable and rate this book 2 stars, because Tessa Dare does know how to write cheeky, enjoyable banter between her hero and heroine.
Apparently, alas, the author also knows how to phone it in. There was just no "there" there, for me. And Izzy fainted dead away.

Not lust, just male awareness.
Especially not visitors of the female kind. She came around the castle every week or so, offering to read him sermons or some other foolishness. At least when Miss Pelham made her sunny march up the hill, basket of good deeds threaded over one arm, she came expecting to find a scarred, unshaven wreck of a man.
And she was far too sensible to faint at the sight. He needed to get her inside—warm her up, give her a splash of whisky and romancing the duke tessa dare in her tea. The sooner she recovered her senses, the sooner she could romancing the duke tessa dare. He wrestled her sodden, unconscious form into his arms and stood.
